Betanzos to Meson do Vento 25km

Monday 22 August

There was a festival in the square of Betanzos last night. There were carts with hot dogs and chips so we took the opportunity to have an early dinner at 7.30pm rather than wait till the normal Spanish time of after 9pm. It is a bit hard to cope with a heavy meal that late at night when you want to start walking early the next day. The Spanish live differently to us and it is their country!

A great walk today. It is starting to feel like a real Camino. We seem to be the only English speaking pilgrims on this route. Ironic seeing as it is called the Camino Ingles (The English camino). Also not very many locals speak English either so we are having to expand our Spanish vocab. and use the translator app when stuck, which is often!

We sent our packs on by the taxi service this morning and they were waiting for us when we arrived at our hotel. €5 each. We won't do it again this Camino but today's walk had a few steep climbs so it was a wise decision.

Some pics from on the way.
St Estaban (Stephen) de Cos church
Eucalyptus forests. These are plentiful in this part of Spain. Sometimes feels like we are walking in Aus. We have been told there was great deforestation for the ship building during the time of the Spanish Armada and the gums are fast growing.
Stop at Xente no Camino.  Our third break. First breakfast in Betanzos before we started then a stop in Meangos for a drink and mostly to use their toilet facilities. (Not very nice). Then this cafe which was beautiful.

Huge quesa bocadilla (cheese sandwich)

Steve: A lot of road walking, which can be hard on the legs and in the afternoon the bitumen heats up. We seek every little bit of weedy road edging for the softer footing. Usually just a prickly slope up to the road edge.
Todays best road section (see small track on road edge)

Makes us appreciate all that DOC provides in NZ.

It is common for people to leave various momentos along the walk. Someone has been leaving postit type notes on many of the Camino way markers with presumably encouragements written in spanish. This one read 'the joyful vitamins' . May we all receive bountifully!

Today's walk

Stayed at Hotel Canaima. 79 euro.
