Day 9, Santa Marta de Penaguião to Vila Pouca de Aguiar

Heavy rain was forecast for the whole day today and it has turned out to be so.

After breakfast we caught a bus from outside our hotel all the way to Vila Pouca de Aguiar. The Gronze App suggests walking the 17.8 kms to Vila Real (mostly road walking on dangerous roads) and then the next day from Vila Real, 29.9 kms, to Vila Pouca de Aguiar but even on a good day it would be too far for us.

When we got on the bus we had planned to get off 10 kms from Vila Pouca de Aguiar and walk from there. (The first two words of this town mean Little Village and I can only suppose the Aguiar word has something to do with the wet rainy weather). The rain had not eased, in fact it was heavier, so we stayed on the bus for the whole journey.

We have a nice hotel for tonight, Hotel Europa, and they let us have our room early so a lazy day catching up on our reading. Fine weather next few days.🌞

As a result of bussing so far today we now only have two days walking left, Vidago tomorrow 18.6, then Chaves on Wednesday 17.6, both days over relatively easy terrain. That will leave us with 3 days to fill in so we're looking at taking bus/train to Salamanca for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

 What a lovely day in Chania. First brunch at Boheme, fried eggs 3, zucchini marinated in spearmint, carob, tomato pesto and potato puffs (fried potato gnocchi). Next an hours ride through Chania in the horse and carriage, ice creams, walk around the harbour, shopping, siesta, drinks on hotel deck overlooking the water, another short siesta, followed by dinner. London, Leamington Spa, Liverpool, Runnymede

 Had 3 lovely days in London with Aidan. Unfortunately Steve had a bad case of air sickness which slowed him down a bit. Highlights for us were dinner at the Queens Head, the visit to Little Venice and the Agatha Christie spoof Murder of Coarse. Always enjoy live theatre. Erin and Brian enjoyed their Buckingham Palace tour and I enjoyed visiting the Barbican and Guild Hall art gallery with Aidan before we all met up and took the ferry to Greenwich and the docklands railway back. Friday we headed up to Leamington Spa through the Cotswolds. Had 3 nice days with Patrick Emma and George, and Stan the dog of course. Dinner out at the Drawing Board on Saturday night and Warwick Castle, Hatton Locks and Stratford on Avon on Sunday. Two nights in Liverpool followed. Fairly wet and windy. We enjoyed a visit to the Western Approaches exhibit recommended by Emma. At Runnymede tonight before our flight to Athens tomorrow. We walked along the Thames to the Magna Carta memorial. Auckland to Porto

 Easter Sunday to 2 May Meeting Aidan outside Paddington station at the Wild Table of Love. We spent two good days in London with Aidan, did a lot of walking through Little Venice canals to Regents Park and a big loop back to Paddington on Easter Monday. Notting Hill for dinner. Tuesday Aidan took the day off and we walked from his place in Whitechapel along Grand Union Canal to Broadway Market for lunch then underground to Trafalgar square and National gallery. Dinner with Aidan at our hotel Montcalm in Paddington. Wednesday train up to Leamington Spa for Patrick's birthday dinner. Drove up to Garstang on Friday, party on Saturday night which was lovely. Nice to catch up with some of Emma's wider family and meet many more. Great band with great lead singer with plenty of energy and engagement with party goers, lovely Lancashire supper and late night just when we were getting past the jet lag.
