A day in Coimbra

Tuesday 15 October.

Crochet and lace blankets and tablecloths used to artistic effect to add colour and filtered light to one of Coimbra's streets.

Coimbra is famous for its university founded in 1290.

Note the black capes the students are wearing over formal black attire. I asked a group of students whether this is how the students usually dress. They explained only on special occasions, today's occasion being to protest at the University authorities 'manifestation of a new direction for the university '.
There was much chanting and singing in the protest. It seems the students want to keep to traditional values, hence those protesting dressed in the traditional formal attire to show their opposition to the changes.
Unusual to see such well dressed protesters.

Coming down the hill from the university.

Candy store with life sized banana lollies. Hmmm.

Amazing. I spent a few weeks of 2022's summer in Portugal and couldn't get to Coimbra, altought I wanted to go. Next time, I guess.

  3. We have wanted to go since the first time we were in Portugal in 2019. Pleased we have been. Those uni students must be very fit, the university sits at the top of a steep hill.
