 Left Auckland on Friday 5th August flying via Singapore to arrive at Heathrow at 6.00a.m. Saturday 6th August. Heathrow much quieter than past experiences. Quick process through the airport. From the Heathrow Central bus station we took the Railair1 coach to Reading (about 50 minutes) only 8 passengers. Enjoyed coffee in the sunshine at the pub by Reading Station before the train to Leamington. Used the Trainline App downloaded before leaving NZ to buy train tickets using the "split fares" method that Emma had previously alerted us to saving 50%. 58 minute train journey to Leamington.

We spent the first 4 days in Leamington Spa where on Sunday we watched some of the Commonwealth Games road cycle race won by NZer Aaron Gates, celebrated Steve's birthday with dinner out at the Cape of Good Hope in Warwick with Patrick and family and George's birthday the following day with brunch at the Steamhouse in Leamington and  bbq at Patrick and Emma's in the evening.

Now in Liverpool for three nights. Did the City and Beatles bus tour this morning then after lunch walked up to the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral, a modernist cathedral dating from the 1960s designed for the liturgical changes of Vatican 2, beautiful tapestries and artwork. Out for dinner soon probably at a nearby tapas bar. Temperature here at the moment 31. Leamington 34. 


Or could be tempted to the Irish Pub.



Looking forward to Spain on Monday where temps look like they will be 22 in A Coruna where we will spend the first 2 days.

      Yes. Very fortunate with the weather. Only downside is our accommodation in Birmingham and here in Liverpool hasn't had aircon or a fan and windows that only open a little way. We have been doing the Mediterranean thing of closing blinds to keep rooms from heating up too much.

Day 11, Vidago to Chaves

Wednesday, 14 May We were intending this to be our final day of walking but we decided this morning that we couldn't face the thought of wading through another 20 or so large cold muddy puddles. Although the day was fine we know those puddles take a long time to dry out. So we caught the bus to Chaves, a lovely city. It is a shame we did not complete our planned walk as we were feeling fit and well and Vidago to Chaves is not a difficult section. However, we have done our best and are very pleased to have achieved as much as we have. After our experience with the cold days and puddly paths we would recommend September as a better time for the Portuguese Interior Camino. Today's photos are of Chaves. Discovered after I took the photo that these are all fake 🤥. It's obvious now I know. Tomorrow we leave Portugal and bus to Ourense in Spain, then train to Zamora and bus to Salamanca where we will have two nights. Back to Santiago de Compostela on Saturday for our flight to Lo...

  Left the Hostel in Vila Nova de Xira, Thursday morning. (excellent hostel) Vila Nova is putting up barriers for the running of the bulls on 13 October. Photos from on the way. Not a good day, beside the road or railway all day and scenery not pleasant. Relaxing with a well deserved beer in Azambuja at the end of a long, hot day. 24 kms walked today. Accom at Casa da Raina. Nice terrace at tonight's hostel. After some relaxing we went out to a pizzeria for dinner. Nice Pizzas, lovely red wine, excellent hosts.

Fene to Pontedeume 15km

 Friday 19th Left our pension at 8 am and had a light breakfast at one of the few open cafes before we left town. Eating times in Spain are so different to what we are used to and this area caters for Spanish holiday makers rather than tourists. Desayunar (breakfast) starts about 10 am. From then on it is coffee and pastries or beer and tapas until dinner time around 9 pm. A lovely Camino waymarker on the front wall of someone's casa as we left Fene. We were soon onto the steep Camino pathway through wooded area. Good views but glad of our walking poles which make us sure footed quadrapeds and help to take the weight off the knees. We stopped at a supermercado to buy fruit and then took the woodland route. Think we were the only pilgrims going this way as it was hard to find the start of it.
