Day 5 Carreco Igreja to Caminha 18 km

The Albergue last night was excellent. An old family property that was developed 4 years ago. Lots of character and we enjoyed an evening meal which Susanna prepared for us. We have stayed at the same albergues as her for three nights and she now moves ahead of us as she has a shorter timeframe before she returns to Germany.

As we were awake early we left at 6.00 a.m. The full moon gives reasonable light but it was a bit dark in the woods section. We needed our torches. (Message to selves -walking in the dark is not worth the risk of tripping over or missing the way markers.) Not all the pathways are smooth like the picture some are rocky and you need to watch your ankles.

On leaving the woods it was still dark and we were searching for a direction marker when a black dog came along and started to follow us. She then led the way for the next 9.5 km (we could not shake her off) until we reached Villa Praia de Ancora. She then seemed to look lost and a bit distressed in the town square. Three young Portuguese people took a big interest in her and were very concerned. We showed them on the map where we had first met her and they said they would take her home. We hope that works out but they were very kind to her so she will be ok.

Our friend the dog. She waited for us at every turn for over 9 kms.

The square at Vila Praia de Ancore where we farewelled our canine companion.
A chapel along the way where a very enthusiastic Portuguese man gave us what was undoubtedly a very informative talk in Portuguese.
Part of a herd of sheep and goats that crossed our path.
Nearing Caminha with Spain visible in the distance.
The last few kilometers were hot. Arrived at our accommodation Arca Nova GuestHouse (€60 for double room with bathroom and excellent breakfast) at 2.00 p.m. after having a beer in the town square.  High of 27 today.
Walked down this street to the town square for dinner tonight. A woman on her balcony sang to us as we passed by. It was quite lovely. If you enlarge the photo you might see her.
